Tips for choosing an epoxy resin colour

When the American designer Greg Klassen first suggested using glass to fill the gaps between wooden slabs, he could hardly have imagined that his idea would become the foundation of a popular interior design trend. Today, epoxy has replaced glass – a durable and long-lasting material that looks particularly impressive when coloured. To create the perfect river table, you need to consider several factors. The most important is choosing the right type of epoxy filling and colour palette.

Types of Epoxy Filling

Opaque filling

Creates the effect of a plastic layer between the wooden slabs. Light does not pass through, making choosing a pure and saturated colour easier. The pigment concentration can be easily adjusted to taste.

Pearl filling

Special powder is added to the epoxy to create the effect of "air currents." Multiple shades can be used simultaneously, giving the tabletop dynamism and depth. The less powder used, the more translucent the filling becomes.

Transparent filling

Even with strong colours, a transparent filling allows light to pass through. This limits the choice of shades but creates a unique effect of light play when illuminated.
The experts at NORBORD can help you bring all your interior dreams to life and create a table that becomes an actual work of art. Experiment with colours, textures, and effects – and your river table will become a centrepiece in any room!

How to Choose a Filling Color

A common mistake is to rely solely on personal preferences when selecting a filling colour without considering the tabletop's thickness. The thickness of the epoxy layer significantly influences the saturation of the colour. For instance, a 1 cm layer may appear nearly colourless, while a 10 cm layer can showcase a rich, deep blue hue.

The Importance of Lighting

Dark colours, such as deep blue or dark green, can look almost black in poorly lit rooms. In these situations, it may be better to opt for lighter shades or to use pearl filling for added contrast.

How Color Affects the Perception of the Table

The colour of the epoxy influences how the size of the table is perceived visually:

Dark shades

Make the tabletop appear smaller and create a sense of depth and weight. This can be useful in small rooms.

Light shades

White, pastel colours give a lighter appearance and visually expand the space. However, scratches and damage may become more visible on light surfaces.
You can achieve interesting effects with colour transitions or contrasting edges that create an impression of greater depth and width.

Impressive Color Combinations

The possibilities for combining colours are almost limitless. Here are some popular approaches:

Contrasting combinations

For example, blue and yellow, black and white. This gives the table an expressive appearance but avoids overwhelming it with too many strong colours.

Related shades

Smooth transitions between different shades of the same colour (blue, green, or beige) create a calm and harmonious atmosphere.
Feel free to add glitter, dried flowers, or other decorative elements to the epoxy for extra effect.

Trends for 2025

In 2025, natural and earthy tones will take centre stage:

Emerald green, terracotta, sand, and beige shades

Create a sense of tranquillity and harmony.

Muted yet vibrant colours

Like coral, turquoise, and dusty pink bring energy and freshness to the interior.
Another trend is the use of gradients and abstract patterns. Tabletops with fillers such as dried flowers or minerals add a touch of exclusivity to the furniture.

Finishing Touches

The final step is a surface treatment, which can be either matte or glossy. Matte finishing creates a frosted glass effect that conceals unnecessary details, while glossy finishing adds shine and depth.
