What you should be aware of with an epoxy table: A comprehensive guide to maintenance and use

Epoxy is a sturdy and visually appealing material often used to create tables. Despite its durability, the material requires special care and careful handling. This article will explore the main threats to an epoxy table and provide recommendations for proper use and maintenance.

Main Vulnerabilities of Epoxy Tables

1. Moisture

Epoxy is highly sensitive to moisture, especially during curing. Water penetration during this period can result in the following issues:

  • Cloudy spots and discolouration – reduced material uniformity, with the appearance of white stains.
  • Air bubbles – evaporation of water can cause bubbles to become trapped in the cured epoxy.
  • Decreased strength – moisture can prevent proper curing, leading to a brittle surface.

To prevent these issues, ensure that materials and moulds used for epoxy are dry and avoid moisture contact during the curing process.

2. Temperature Conditions

Temperature stability is crucial when working with epoxy. Important recommendations include:

  • Optimal working temperature: 35–37°C to ensure even mixing of components.
  • Avoid overheating – at temperatures above 40°C, the curing process can become uncontrollable, potentially damaging the material.
  • Even heating – before mixing, it's essential to warm both components to room temperature.

A water bath can be used for heating, but do not overheat the material.

3. Mechanical Damage

Although cured epoxy is durable, it is still vulnerable to scratches, chipping, and impacts. To prolong the table's lifespan., it is recommended to use protective coatings:

  • Impact-resistant varnish – protects against mechanical damage.
  • Polyurethane varnish – resistant to moisture and cleaning agents.
  • Hard wax oil – provides shine and protects against stains and dirt.

The choice of protection depends on the usage conditions.

4. Exposure to High Temperature

Epoxy can withstand a wide temperature range, but prolonged exposure to high temperatures may cause deformation and yellowing.

  • Recommended temperature range: -40°C to +120°C.
  • Short-term exposure up to +150°C is possible but not recommended.
  • Prolonged exposure over +120°C can lead to irreversible structural changes.

To prevent damage, it is advisable to use heat-resistant mats for hot objects.

5. Exposure to UV Radiation

Direct sunlight can cause yellowing and a loss of surface gloss. To protect the table, you should:

  • Place it away from windows.
  • Use curtains or UV-filtering covers.
Epoxy tables require careful maintenance to prevent moisture, temperature, mechanical impacts, heat, and UV radiation damage.

Maintenance Rules for Epoxy Tables

To preserve the table's appearance and strength, follow these simple rules:

  • Cleaning: Use a soft cloth (microfiber or flannel) and mild cleaning agents.
  • Prohibited substances: Avoid abrasive cleaners, acetone, alcohol, solvents, and hard brushes or sponges.
  • Protection against scratches: Use coasters and protective surfaces.
  • Updating the protective layer: Depending on usage, it is recommended to update the protective layer every 1–2 years.

Frequently Asked Questions

Epoxy tables are stunning pieces that deserve special care! To keep them looking their best, use heat-resistant mats for hot pots—this prevents warping. Use a soft, damp cloth with a mild cleaner to gently wipe away stains. Keeping your table indoors is best; UV rays and temperature changes can be harsh on the material. To maintain that beautiful finish, consider refreshing the protective layer every 1-2 years. By following these simple tips, you'll ensure your table remains a cherished centrepiece for years!
